Good news for Gottschalk enthusiasts: Gottschalk's fascinating account of his musical journey through the Americas, his Notes of a Pianist, which had been out of print for decades, has recently (2006) been re-issued in paperback, with corrections and a new foreword, by Princeton University Press. Packed with musical insights, personal anecdotes and social commentary, Gottschalk's Notes are a must-read for anyone with an interest in 19th-century American culture.

There are, however, excellent biographies of Louis Moreau Gottschalk. The most thoroughly researched account of his life is presented by S. Frederick Starr, formerly president of Oberlin College, in his 1995 book “Bamboula! The life and times of Louis Moreau Gottschalk” published by Oxford University Press. The Oxford UP hardcover edition is out of print, but a paperback edition is available from the University of Illinois Press (2000):

An earlier biography, published in 1958 (and, somewhat surprisingly, still “in print”), is Vernon Loggins´s book “Where the Word Ends”. It contains some minor inaccuracies and does not quite reach the academic standard of Starr´s tome, but at half the number of pages it is perhaps more accessible to the general reader.
Vernon Loggins: Where the Word Ends 296 pages Louisiana State University Press 1958.
